March 5, 2011 - Understanding Historic Photographs - Tilt Gallery, Phoenix
This 4-hour workshop will provide an introduction to collecting photographs and photographica. It will begin with an overview of photographic history for collectors, future collectors, and others interested in photography, and will address 19th and early 20th century photography including:
* Cased images (Daguerreotypes, Ambrotypes, and Tintypes) - 1840 to 1860
* Early paper processes and albumen prints (cartes-de-visites Cabinet, boudoir cards and mounted photographs) - 1855 to 1900
* Stereographs - 1855 to 1940 * Vernacular photographs and snapshots - 1885 to 1940
* Albums
* Photographic Postcards - 1900 to 1940
Cameras, viewers, photographica and related ephemera will also be discussed. In this workshop you will learn about sources and collecting organizations, and be shown real examples of the photographic processes through a hands-on session as well as a PowerPoint presentation. This workshop will be highly interactive and will include time for discussion of items brought by participants.
